1972 Chevrolet Nova

This Is My Son's First Car, A Father/Son Project.  It Is A 1972 Chevy Nova 2dr With A 250 6 Cylinder, Powerglide Transmission, Manual Steering, Manual Drum Brakes And 34 Year Old Paint.  This Nova Was Built In The Van Nuys, CA Plant And Sold To An Older Gentleman Out Of Groth Chevrolet In Huntington Beach, CA.

Here Is The Nova As Seen On Craigslist Before We Brought It Home.

Here Are The First Pictures Taken The Day After We Brought It Home.  The Hood Was Swapped Out To The 2" Cowl Hood 20 Minutes After We Got It Home That Night, My Son Couldn't Wait To Get It Put On.  He Also Removed The Rear Bumper Before These Pictures Were Taken.

Before We Installed The Bumpers, We fixed The Small Rust Spots On The Rear Quarter Ends, Right Under The Corner Of The Bumpers And The Rust On The Right Quarter, Behind The Wheel.

There Was Also Some Rust Coming Through On The Roof Up By The Front Window.  It Was All Cut Out, Metal Underneath Treated With Por 15, The Replacement Sheet Metal Was Welded In Place.  This Was Done On Both Sides.  Although The Drivers Side Was Not Bad, I Wanted The Thin Metal Removed, Underneath Treated And Fresh Sheet Metal Welded In.

We Were Able To Score A Set Of Black Leather Seats To Replace The Overstuffed Velour Bench Seat....Not Entirely Finished But You Get The Picture

Here Are Some Shots Of The Front Suspension & Brake.

The New Power Steering Box, Pump And Parts Installed

Here The Nova Is After Some Roughing In On The Body, Wheels/Tires Installed, Suspension In And Bumpers Put On.  Also The Grille Area Was Painted Like The Super Sports.

The 250, 6 Cylinder In All It's Glory.  This Running Gear Will Eventually Give Way To A 350 Small Block With A Turbo 350 Transmission, Probably During The Summer Before My Sons Senior Year In High School

We Took It Down And Had An Alignment Done, Afterwards We Went next Door To TUCKER TIRE (BEST Tire Store Around).  Had Them Flip The Tires So That The Raised White Letters Would Face Outwards For A more Aggressive Look And To Re-Balance Them.  When I Went To Pay For The Work, They Told Me Not To Worry About It....No Other Place Around Here Would Have Done That.  Anyways, Here Are A Couple Shots Of The Tires.

We Decided To Shoot The Nova With An Epoxy Primer, My Son Did Not Like The "Original" Look Of The 34 Year Old Paint, I Thought It Looked Rather Cool.  The Primer Was A Boring Gray Until We Added Some House Of Kolor Cobalt Blue Kandy Concentrate, Turned Out Better Than We Expected It To.  The Only Body Work That Was Done Was What I Took Pictures Of Above.  We Still Need To Finish The Right Rear Quarter Behind The Rear Wheel (It Was Just Roughed In), And Fix The Last 2 Remaining Rust Spots On The Front Fenders Behind The Front Wheels (Where They ALL Seem To Rust)  I Am Still Amazed At How Straight This Thing Is, Aside From A Few Small Door Dings And The Stuff Already Mentioned This Has Turned Out To Be A Much Better Bargain Than Previously Expected.  Hopefully Tomorrow  We Can Add The New 3 Point Shoulder Harness Seatbelts And Paint The Cowl, Polish The Front & Rear Window Chrome And Install It All......Here Are A Few Shots Of It:

These Are Just A Few Pictures I Took Today That Has The Window Chrome (Polished Up Nicely), The Cowl And Wipers (Which The Stainless Also Polished Up Nice).  Anyways, It Now Looks More Complete.

Was Able To Get The Silver Faced Gauges Installed In The Car Last Weekend.  I Had To Make Up The Gear Selector Letters Because The Kit Only Came With A Turbo 350 Version, Not A Powerglide.  We Also Painted The Heater Control Panel To Match (Although The Silver Looks A Different Tone Due To The Angle Difference).

Also Added Was A New Viper Alarm.  I Had Some Power Door Lock Actuators So It Now Has Power Locks, It Also Locks Itself When The Car Is Started And Unlocks When It Is Turned Off (Trying To Bring It Into The 21st Century).

It Was Always My Intention To Install A Nice Stereo In The Nova, I Guess We Just Got A Bit Carried Away.  As Of Now We Have A Pioneer DEH-P6900UB, USB Enabled Deck With A 4 Gig USB Drive Plugged Into It.  Pioneer 5 1/4" Speakers In The Kick Panels & 1" Pioneer Tweeters In The Windshield Pillar.  Pioneer 6x9" Coaxial In The Rear Deck With A Rockford Fosgate 800.4 To Run The Fronts & Rears And A Rockford Fosgate 800.2 For The 12W3V2 12" Subs In The Custom Box We Made.  The Sound Is Pretty Amazing, Just Need To Install The Rest Of The Sound Deadener And Do The Finnish Work.

After Much Thought, We Decided To Paint The Nova A Satin Black.  The DP90LF Did Not Fair To Well In The Elements And Allowed Moisture To Get Through And Also Chalked Up Under The Southern California Sun.

We Decided To Go Ahead And Make Some Changes Once Again To The Gauges. Decided That A Red Light Telling Me I Have Engine Problems As The Motor Locks Up Is Not A Good Way To Go.  We Wanted REAL Gauges, So We Know What's Going On With The Water Temp, Oil Pressure, Etc...  I Picked Up A Set Of Iequus Gauges Because they Are Quite A Bit Less Expensive Than Autometer Gauges And Perform The Same Functions.  We Had to Modify The Dash Bezel To Get It All To Fit properly.

Received The Tachometer Last Week And Decided It Would Look Better With Brighter Backlighting So We Opted To Go LED.  The Speedometer Had Dark Places On The Sides So We Modified The Speedometer And Added 2 More LED's TO Fix The Darkness Problem.

Here Is The B-Quiet After It Was Installed... What A Huge Difference

Not The Best Possible Pictures (taken with my phone) But Here Is The 350 Engine Swap.  He Scrubbed, Scraped, Sanded & Cleaned The Whole Engine Compartment After The 250 6cyl Came Out.  We Then Painted Satin Black Epoxy To Freshen It Up.

I Had Built A Panel That I Attached To The Engine Stand So We Could Ground Start it To Get The Timing Set & To Ensure There Were No leaks.  It Was Awesome To See My Sons Face When We First Started It, He Thought It Was The Craziest Thing To Have A Motor Run Outside The Car.

I Thought Maybe We Could Leave The Shorty Headers On When We Installed It But The Drivers Side Had To Be Removed.  Mufflers Are A Bit On the Loud Side.  350 Moves So Much Better Than The 250 Did.
